The pattern is the clue
One week, three lines, no analysis.
Marcus keeps returning to a plain question: what is my ruling faculty doing now? Not what it should be doing, and not what is wrong with it. What is it doing. It is an observational question, asked repeatedly.
Asked once, it tells you little. Asked across a week and written down, it stops being introspection and becomes data. Stress that repeats has a shape, and the shape is almost never visible from inside a single instance.
The discipline is to record without interpreting. Analysis during the week contaminates the record, because you will start writing what fits the theory you formed on Tuesday.
A practice for this week
Three lines each time
- Each time pressure rises, write three things: what happened, how you felt, what you did.
- Thirty seconds. No analysis, no judgment, no editing.
- At the end of the week, read the entries in one sitting.
- Look for one repeating situation, one returning feeling, and one response you want to change.
You may find the pattern is not what you assumed, or that there are two rather than one. That is the value of a record: it is harder to argue with than memory, which reliably edits in favour of whatever you already believe about yourself.
